"Red Rover, Red Rover, send Bobby right over!"
Dear Friends,
Remember Red Rover from years gone by? Two rows of kids clasping arms form lines facing each other, alternately calling for the other side to send someone charging over. If the runner succeeds and breaks through the human wall, a defendant must join the opponent’s line. If the runner fails, he must surrender and help bolster his opponent’s side.

It seems today that our community has taken up a game of Red Rover in a real life setting, with all-too-real victims and consequences. The teams? Domestic violence versus our community. Sadly, domestic violence seems to be winning.
Every day, domestic violence rams through the community. With each bruising breakthrough, domestic violence claims another victim. In October alone, Colorado lost 11 lives to domestic violence — one every three days.
Red Rover, Red Rover, another family over.
Every child who witnesses the abuse is victimized as well, yanked unwillingly into a life of fear, pain, and sadness. To make matters worse, little boys who witness their fathers hitting their mothers are 700 times more likely to become adults who abuse their girlfriends and wives. And 60% of all little girls who see the violence will themselves become victims of abuse.
Red Rover, Red Rover, another generation over.
The good news is that our community has strong players on its side. We have battered women’s shelters, legal advocacy groups, and violence prevention programs. And we have AMEND, a program that addresses the roots of the problem, the batterers. By counseling men who have been abusive and teaching them new conflict resolution and anger management skills, we help end the violence in their homes. We teach them new behaviors to model for their children. In this way we help prevent violence in the future.
You, too, can strengthen the team. How? By remembering AMEND in your giving. All donations made to AMEND are tax-deductible and will be used to help us continue providing counseling, advocacy, and community education. Your donation does make a difference.
If all of us on our community’s team could join hands and work together to end domestic violence, we just might win back some of those held captive in its ranks. Isn’t it time we changed the course of the game?
Red Rover, Red Rover . . . let’s send no more over.
